How I Organize, Write, and Edit My Novels
Over the last few years, this site has generated over 120,000 views from writers looking for tips. The #1 question I get isn't about plot—it's about process. "How do you actually finish the book?"
I've written novels the hard way (in Word), but now I've found the modern way. If I were starting a new book today, this is the exact technology stack I would use to save time and frustration. These are the industry standards every writer should know about.

1. The Brain: Scrivener
If you are still writing in Word, you are playing on Hard Mode. Scrivener is widely considered the gold standard for fiction because it lets you see your entire plot at once. You can drag-and-drop chapters, view your research side-by-side with your draft, and reorganize your entire plot without getting lost. It is the industry standard for a reason.
Best for: Organizing big projects and messy first drafts.
Cost: One-time purchase (No monthly subscription).
2. The Engine: Sudowrite (AI)
Writer's block is optional in 2026.
Sudowrite is the most advanced AI tool specifically for fiction. While I write my own drafts, tools like this are incredible for breaking writer's block or brainstorming plot twists instantly..
Best for: Breaking writer's block and expanding descriptions.
My Tip: Use the "Describe" feature to add texture to your scenes.
3. The Editor: ProWritingAid
Once the draft is done, the real work begins.
ProWritingAid goes far beyond a standard spell-checker. Unlike basic tools that just look for typos, this software analyzes your manuscript for "glue words," passive voice, and repetitive sentence structures. It acts like a digital writing coach, teaching you to be a stronger writer while it helps fix your mistakes.
Best for: Polishing your manuscript before publishing.
